National Adoption Awareness Month has been celebrated monthly since 1995 when President Bill Clinton expanded the National Adoption Awareness Week, set forth by Ronald Reagan in 1984, to an entire month.

The purpose of this month is to help children in foster care find families, but it has also expanded to spread awareness in general about adoption services, the process of adopting, etc.

Thanks to social media, more and more people are learning about the intricacies of adoption, adopting through the foster care system, and more children are being adopted. How can you help spread the word about National Adoption Awareness Month?

Share posts from worthy organizations

Find a local organization or nonprofit that is helping to support adoption and foster care and share their posts. Not sure of a local organization? Adoption.com has a great photolisting page of children who are in need of forever families.

Share your own story of adoption

Have you personally been affected by adoption? This a good time to share your story. If you adopted, how did you do it? If you were adopted, what would you like people to know?

Donate to organizations that support adoption

Again, you may have a local not for profit you’d like to donate to. If not, check out helpusadopt.org. They raise funds to offer grants to offset the cost of adoption for families who have completed their home study and are moving forward in the adoption process.

Sharing stories is the best way to get attention about the nearly 440,000 children in the foster care system in the United States that need to be adopted.
