A medical or medication abortion, sometimes called a chemical abortion due to its use of pharmaceuticals, is a non-surgical abortion method advised for women who are still in the early stages of pregnancy when they decide to terminate the pregnancy. An abortion pill can be used up to about nine weeks, or 63 days, after the first day of the woman's last period. These are typically available through clinics with minimal supervision.
Taking the abortion pill, or mifepristone, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000, is the first step of a "chemical abortion," which blocks the hormone progesterone and leads to the shedding of the uterus's lining. About three days after taking the mifepristone, a woman will take misoprostol to empty the uterus. This process usually results in cramps and heavy bleeding for several hours. Within the next few hours or days, the pregnancy will abort. A woman can expect her a period about a month after having a medical abortion.
Side effects are varied per individual but can include heavy bleeding, cramping, headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. A follow up exam is necessary to insure that the process is complete. If abortion did not occur, aspiration would be required to remove any remaining pregnancy tissue. Women should consider all the risks and plan on some counseling as needed following the abortion as some women will experience severe feelings of loss often associated with hormone changes.
According to an overview of abortion in the United States published by the Guttmacher Institute in 2008, nearly half of all pregnancies in America are unplanned and 40 percent of those are terminated. About 62 percent of abortions performed in the United States are likely to be medical abortions, as suggested by data reported by the Guttmacher Institute in 2008. The cost of a medical abortion may be as low as $300 or as high as $800, however, the most common price for these early pregnancy abortions are around $500.
Women who have had chemical abortions may carry feelings of regret, grief or loss long after they’ve physically healed from the procedure. Follow up care with a therapist or counselor may help work through some of these feelings. Having a support group in place before undergoing a medical abortion is advised. Research and explore options before making any life altering decisions.
