Russia stopped foreign adoptions in Crimea. Foreign adoptions have been suspended in Crimea by order of the Crimean Ministry of Education, Science and Youth. According to Russian law, foreigners may start the adoption process one year after the child’s name has been added to the database of orphans and children without parental care.
On March 17th President Putin signed a decree recognizing Crimea as an independent state and in the end helps to explain how Russia stopped foreign adoptions in Crimea. In doing so, Crimea was freed to create its own laws and regulations regarding foreign adoption. The same day, however, leaders of Crimea signed a treaty regarding the unification of Crimea with Russia, essentially making them allies. Russia has not allowed adoptions of Russian children by U.S. Citizens since late 2012.
Two months after Putin’s decree was signed, all foreign adoptions from Crimea have been suspended. Is this a direct result of Crimea’s relationship with Russia? Yes, Russia stopped foreign adoptions in Crimea, by flexing its massive strength against Crimea.
