After a woman or teen experiences an unplanned pregnancy, she must choose between her available options of parenting the child, placing it with an adoptive family or terminating the pregnancy. For women who are stuck between the former two options, those that require her to see the pregnancy to term, the decision can lead to a tough change in lifestyle. Sometimes, this change is too overwhelming to experience in one's current setting. That is where the somewhat dated idea of going off to an institution or "home" for pregnant women comes into play.

A maternity home may seem like a convention of the past or as a place where women who didn't want to shame their family name or reputation would go into hiding from harmful stigmas. Certainly, the number of housing necessary for these reasons has decreased due to a changing societal view of premarital sex, unplanned pregnancy options like abortion and a less judgmental society. Despite the decrease in maternity homes compared to the peak decade of 1950, modern homes offers women an understanding environment where women can prepare to place a child with an adoptive couple. These homes are built like a dormitory that one would find one a college campus. Sometimes, a maternity home may also refer to a family that has agreed to take a pregnant woman into their home for the duration of her pregnancy.

The benefit of a pregnancy home is that women will be in an environment with others in similar situations. It's like a 24-hour support group. In fact, many of the homes offer counseling services to these women. Other homes may have classes available for women who are considering raising the child instead of placing it with an adoptive couple. These classes may be helpful for women who will need to get a job to support the child as well as basic parenting skills. The staff at these homes are also great resources for women who are interested in applying for federal aid or the kind of legal benefits that can come from being a single mother.

The cost to stay in a pregnancy home is generally free. However, there may be certain chores or expectations of the women who stay in a home.
